"In the beginning, there was Jack. And Jack had a groove."

On Thursday, January 26th, Strangelove pays homage to electronic visionary Jack Dangers.

DJs Tomas Diablo, Mitch (Death Guild, Meat), and very special guest Ben Stokes (DHS) spin the best mixes and our favorite tracks from Meat Beat Manifesto, Tino Corp, and Jack's remix work for such artists as Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, DHS, the Cranes, Coil, BiGod 20, Consolidated, and many more. And, of course, the best dark electro, industrial, new wave, and goth.

We will be giving away tickets to see Meat Beat Manifesto at Mezzanine on February 9th, as well as other Meat Beat Manifesto-related treats such as posters and classic MBM albums.

A brief history of Jack

After the breakup of the group 'Perennial Divide', Jack Dangers formed Meat Beat Manifesto in 1987, and mixed hip-hop beats with power noise. Initially considered an industrial act, MBM released a string of hard-hitting tracks on the Wax Trax label, such as 'God O.D.', 'Strap Down', and 'Genocide'. In 1990, Meat Beat Manifesto changed labels and released the seminal classic '99%', which contained 'Psyche Out', and 'Helter Skelter'. A B-side from this album, 'Radio Babylon', is widely recognized as the catalyst for the birth of jungle music. In the 90's, Jack inspired the big-beat sounds of artists like Prodigy and the Chemical Brothers, and released 3 more albums - 'Satiricon', the double album 'Subliminal Sandwich', and 'Actual Sounds and Voices'. After the commercial success of the single 'Prime Audio Soup' on the Matrix soundtrack, Jack dissolved Meat Beat Manifesto and released a string of records for DJs on the Tino Corp label (founded by Jack and Ben Stokes). In recent years, Jack reformed Meat Beat Manifesto and released the albums 'RUOK?', the jazz-oriented 'At the Center' and follow-up EP 'Off-centre', the DVD album 'In Dub', and a remix collection based on the Storm the Studio sessions. Jack has also recently released a number of albums of his solo work.

Jack Dangers is also an established remix artist, and his distinctive sound is instantly recognizable.

We usually have treats on the bar for our patrons... cookies and candy and such. Well, seeing as this month we're honoring a vegan, I will be 'testing' some vegan cookie and brownie recipes this week in anticipation of Strangelove.

    Mmmm.... vegan treats.

Very thoughtful of you! We'll make sure we don't slaughter any animals, endanger any threatened species or cut down any rainforests either. Just for one day. Then we can all go back to being pigs ~ or not - Jack's a pretty powerful influence.

He is Electro - his brain is bigger than ours.

well, the vegan cookies didn't work out too well. They were very yummy, but the consistency of the dough was never right - it was more like thick pancake batter. So the cookies would disintegrate pretty easily. Made good ice cream topping, though.

But the vegan BROWNIES! Now they were quite delicious. So I've baked another 2 batches of those for this month's Strangelove. (I couldn't help it. They were so good, I devoured the original batch). And in case you're wondering - the magic ingredient is Apple Sauce!

We'll also have some vegan ginger cookies from Hot Cookie.

Big thanks to everyone who came out - I had such a great time! Unfortunately our special guest, Ben Stokes, was a no-show, but Mitch more than made up for it with a second incredible set, and I made sure to play some of Ben's video work with 'Attention Earth People' and 'House of God' up on the screens.

A high point for me was dancing to Mitch's incredible blend of Skinny Puppy and the Beastie Boys (such delicious sacrilege!). And at the point in 'Intergalactic' where the music drops off and he says "mmm... drop", Mitch switched gears to Meat Beat Manifesto's 'Drop' from Satiricon. Pure genius. I was also thrilled to see so many people dancing to Jack's music throughout the night.

The full setlist is now up at www.strangelovesf.com

Congratulations to Malek and Layla for winning tickets to see Meat Beat Manifesto at Mezzanine on February 9th, as well as the two winners of MBM CDs and posters. And for those of you who enjoyed the vegan brownies, you can check out the recipe here: www.recipezaar.com/150473

Next up: Our 1-Year Anniversary on February 23rd!
