On Friday, January 2nd, Strangelove focuses on 4 of our favorite record labels. In the back room, DJs Tomas Diablo and Unit 77 (Attack Haus Productions) spin the best of Wax Trax! and Razormaid! Records. In the front room, DJs Orko and Otter (Dancing Ghosts Productions) spin the best of Mute and 4AD Records!
Wax Trax! defined industrial music, and featured artists like Front 242, Ministry, KMFDM, Revolting Cocks, Front Line Assembly, My Life With The Thill Kill Kult, Coil, and Skinny Puppy side-projects Cyberakitf and Doubting Thomas.
Since 1984, Razormaid! Records has been the premier DJ remix label, and has released dance mixes of artists like Depeche Mode, the Cure, New Order, Gary Numan, Red Flag, Microchip League, Kraftwerk, the Eurythmics, and Nitzer Ebb.
Mute Records was formed by Depeche Mode producer Daniel Miller in 1978 to release his single 'Warm Leatherette' (under the name 'The Normal'). Since then Mute has released music by Fad gadget, Nitzer Ebb, Goldfrapp, Yaz, Erasure, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and of course Depeche Mode.
4AD was formed in 1979 and funded by Beggars Banquet. They have released music by Bauhaus, the Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Clan of Xymox, Tones on Tail, This Mortal Coil, Xmal Deutchland, the Pixies and more.
Strangelove is every first Friday at the CAT CLUB (Folsom and 8th), with different themes and guests every month. There's lots of room to dance and socialize, and if you keep dancing, we keep the party going until 3AM!

Re: Friday, January 2nd: WaxTrax/Razormaid/Mute/4AD celebration
Sun, January 4, 2009 - 10:32 AMDespite being only 2 days after New Year's Eve, we still had a great crowd of over 200 people! Thank you so much to everyone who came out and made Attack of the Record Labels so memorable.... with one exception: to whomever set off the stink bomb in the back dance room at 1AM, you can suck it. The rotten egg smell only lasted 10 minutes, as I quickly learned where the controls for the supply and return fans are (and discovered that the bar owns some really nice incense).
Huge thanks to this month's guests - Unit77, Orko, and Otter. Thanks to 4AD for giving us more than 10 albums to give away (from artists like the Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Bauhaus, and more), and to Dancing Ghosts for making the connection with 4AD. And congratulations to our winners: Dire Deparra, Jane W., Daphne G., and local artist Jard!
I hope to see you on February 6th for Strangelove's FOUR YEAR ANNIVERSARY! And on 3rd Saturdays starting January 17 at DANSE MACABRE at Julie's Supper Club (Folsom at 7th).

Re: Friday, January 2nd: WaxTrax/Razormaid/Mute/4AD celebration
Mon, January 5, 2009 - 6:54 PMSo I was telling a friend of mine today about the theme from last Friday. He has a large collection of Razormaid and other remix record. He also used to do remixes for Hot Trax(x?)... Anyway, he laughed at the back room theme. He told me that back when Wax Trax was putting out their big hits from the mid to late 80's, Joseph Watt from Razomaid was trying to get permission to re-edit some of their songs. They wouldn't let him touch any of them. I don't know if it ever got resolved. Are there any Wax Trax songs on Razormaid? -

Re: Friday, January 2nd: WaxTrax/Razormaid/Mute/4AD celebration
Tue, January 6, 2009 - 7:29 AMThere's a couple that I know of:
Front242 - Welcome to Headhunter (Razormaid)
Revolting Cocks - We Shall Cleanse the World (Razormaid mix) -

Re: Friday, January 2nd: WaxTrax/Razormaid/Mute/4AD celebration
Tue, January 6, 2009 - 1:38 PMYeah, I ran into Mitch last night and he told me an interesting story about Wax Trax, Al Jorgensen and Razormaid and what spawned 1000 Homo DJ's. Ask him to tell that story... Well actually there's a mention of it here... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1000_Homo_DJs - but at a quick glance they don't mention Razormaid by name.

Re: Friday, January 2nd: WaxTrax/Razormaid/Mute/4AD celebration
Wed, January 7, 2009 - 7:31 AMfrom Wikipedia:
"Jourgensen and Nash were in the label's office listening to an unauthorized remix of the Revolting Cocks' single "We Shall Cleanse the World". Nash comforted Jourgensen's disapproval of the remix's existence by assuring him that it would only ever be heard by "a thousand homo DJ's.""
Hmmm.. I wonder if that's the Razormaid mix of "We Shall CLeanse the World" that they're talking about. Too funny. Suddenly the Wax Trax vs. Razormaid room takes on a whole new meaning.
Very glad I played 1000 Homo DJs now.
